One way I learned to create a happier life was to try to find more reasons to smile, and create more reasons to laugh. Even when I was feeling pretty low, the mere act of smiling and laughing helped me train myself to feel better as a default feeling.

Now, when I see people, I try to remember to smile at them, even if I’m deep in my own thoughts. When things get tough and stressful, I try to think of something to bring up that will help people laugh and ease the tension in an appropriate way. Sometimes it’s just the smiling and tone of voice that helps move the mood upward.

I’ve had a long day trying to beat a flu or something, and tomorrow is going to be a day with more than the usual amount of pressure and stress. I’m going to go find something funny to watch before resting, to remind myself to continually find the laughter.

Tomorrow, I’m going to keep on the lookout for reasons to smile. May you find many reasons also!

I was thinking about how to write a little bit of a lead-in as to how Commander Brain manages our lives, often to the point of micro-management. So I went back to re-read yesterday’s post, and saw that WordPress helpfully linked three posts that it found relevant. That list included the prior two days’ posts where I’d introduced my Zen Year project, as well as this little gem: The toughest part of our individual life story is usually the narrator’s voice.

The narration of our life story is provided by the ever-helpful Commander Brain. When things happen to us, it is up to Commander Brain to apply the label that informs us what categories and emotions it feels are required. As we honor and follow these labels, we allow Commander Brain to shape how we experience our lives.

This is why it’s so important to train Commander Brain to be a flexible, responsive expression of our mental processes, or even physical or spiritual. A rigid tyrant is hardly likely to help us adapt and grow in joyful and fluid ways, is it?

Fortunately, while Commander Brain may resist change it doesn’t feel it controls, it remains quite trainable. We just have to have patience and trust in our own resilience, and that these traits will learn to express themselves through our Ego, as well.
